The Gatherers

MoMA

In an era where the overwhelming influx of waste and information shapes our daily experiences, The Gatherers exhibition at MoMA PS1 offers a profound exploration of how contemporary artists confront these pressing global concerns. This compelling exhibition showcases works by fourteen international artists, many appearing in a U.S. museum setting for the first time, embracing mediums such as sculptural installation, assemblage, painting, video, and performance. They collectively engage with the theme of gathering — sifting through detritus and excess — to comment on the cultural, political, and environmental reverberations of today’s world.

For centuries, artists have found inspiration in rummaging through discarded materials. However, The Gatherers emphasizes the renewed significance of this practice for a generation navigating the complexities and failures of contemporary global dynamics, including the lingering impacts of globalization and neoliberalism. The featured artists spatialize politics through their engagement with constructed environments, invoking histories that resonate into the future and urging viewers to reconsider relationships between materials, memory, and power.

Notable artists in the exhibition include Karimah Ashadu, Tolia Astakhishvili (with Dylan Peirce and Maka Sanadze), Miho Dohi, Andro Eradze, He Xiangyu, Samuel Hindolo, Geumhyung Jeong, Klara Liden, Jean Katambayi Mukendi, Nick Relph, Selma Selman, Ser Serpas, Emilija Škarnulytė, and Zhou Tao. Each artist brings a unique perspective, challenging the boundaries of waste and value while addressing urgent global and local contexts.

This exhibition is organized by Ruba Katrib, Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, alongside Sheldon Gooch, Curatorial Assistant, with research support from Serena Moscardelli, NYU Curatorial Fellow. The Gatherers not only reveals the transformative potential of artistic practices engaging with refuse and excess but also highlights their role in fostering dialogues about environment, politics, and history that shape our shared future.
