Rosa Barba: The Ocean of One’s Pause

Through Jul 6, 2025

MoMA

Rosa Barba’s exhibition The Ocean of One’s Pause presents a comprehensive exploration of the artist’s fifteen-year engagement with the medium of film, encompassing conceptual investigations that blend historical documentation with sensory encounters. Barba’s work often contemplates the dynamic interplay of time and space, using cinema to investigate the vibratory nature of experience. The installation features an array of works including film, kinetic sculptures, and sound compositions that probe natural landscapes and human-induced environmental transformations.

At the center of the exhibition is Charge, a newly commissioned 35mm film that elucidates light as a catalyst for ecological change and as a vector of scientific progress. The exhibition is further enlivened by a series of live performances, designed as an ‘exploded poem,’ where the combined sonic textures of percussionist Chad Taylor, vocalist Alicia Hall Moran, and Rosa Barba herself activate and extend the cinematic atmosphere throughout the space, creating a multisensory symphony that deepens engagement with the works on view.
