Discover the captivating world of jade artistry through the extraordinary exhibition “A Passion for Jade: The Bishop Collection,” now on view at The Met Fifth Avenue. This focused presentation showcases over one hundred remarkable objects from the prized Heber Bishop collection, featuring carvings crafted from jade, the most esteemed stone in China, as well as other beautifully worked hardstones.

The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the refined craftsmanship of Chinese gemstone carvers of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), a period known for its elegance and sophistication in decorative arts. Alongside these exquisite Chinese works are masterful examples by Mogul Indian artisans (1526–1857), whose accomplished skills inspired and influenced their Chinese counterparts, highlighting a rich history of cross-cultural artistic exchange and exotic inspiration.

Visitors will also gain insights into traditional jade-working techniques through a display of Chinese stone-working tools and illustrations of jade workshops. These elements illuminate the skillful and labor-intensive processes behind each meticulously carved piece, enhancing appreciation for the artistry and cultural significance embedded in each object.

This exhibition is made possible by the Florence and Herbert Irving Fund for Asian Art Exhibitions and is presented in Gallery 222 at The Met Fifth Avenue. Admission to this exhibition is included with museum entry, encouraging exploration of this exquisite collection within a world-class art setting.

Immerse yourself in the rich textures and history of jade artistry, where stories are told through stones carved with mastery and passion. From delicate marriage cups and archaic-style vases adorned with dragons, to mythical beasts and intricate headdress ornaments, each object invites contemplation of its ancient origins and the cultural narratives it represents. This exhibition is a testament to the enduring allure of jade and its place at the heart of Chinese art and craftsmanship.
