New Photography 2025: Lines of Belonging marks the 40th anniversary of MoMA’s renowned New Photography series, presenting a compelling exhibition that features thirteen visionary artists and collectives. These creative voices delve into themes of belonging and interconnectedness, exploring how culture and identity are shaped through personal narratives, political histories, and intergenerational memory.

The exhibition highlights artistic practices from four cities—Kathmandu, New Orleans, Johannesburg, and Mexico City—that have served as long-standing centers of life, creativity, and communal engagement, transcending national boundaries. Through their work, these artists challenge conventional archival narratives, offering fresh perspectives to envision future communities and redefine collective memory.

The featured artists include Sandra Blow, Tania Franco Klein, and Lake Verea based in Mexico City; Gabrielle Goliath, Lebohang Kganye, Sabelo Mlangeni, and Lindokuhle Sobekwa from Johannesburg; Nepal Picture Library, Sheelasha Rajbhandari, and Prasiit Sthapit representing Kathmandu; and L. Kasimu Harris, Renee Royale, and Gabrielle Garcia Steib from New Orleans. Across diverse mediums and approaches, the exhibition offers a thoughtful counterpoint to the rapid pace and digital consumption of imagery today, emphasizing persistence, care, and slowness as vital artistic practices.
